What is Dinner Anyway?

Published by kelley77 at 8:26 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Dinner is defined asĀ  a meal normally consisting of a combination of cooked, or sometimes uncooked, proteins (meat, fish or legumes), with vegetables, and/or starch products like rice, noodles, or potatoes.

Dinner used to be eaten in the afternoon. Now dinner can be anytime from the afternoon to as late as 8 o’clock at night. Dinner comes from the French word diner.

A formal dinner has seven courses. The first is appetizers or hors d’ouvres. Then there is a soup course. Following the soup is a fish course. Next is the entree followed by the meat course. Then is the dessert course which is followed by the cheese course.

Following all the courses would be coffee or brandy. Formal dinners are really a thing of the past. I really couldn’t see myself making a seven course dinner. I guess that’s why they are usually served at parties and banquets.

As you can see, dinner has come a long way over the course of history. It’s probably for the better because eating that much every day, you’d really pack on the pounds.
